Malgrate Castle: Medieval Castle from 1351
The Malgrate castle is a medieval fortification located in Malgrate, in the municipality of Villafranca in Lunigiana, in the province of Massa Carrara. The Castle is owned by the Municipality and is open to the public under the management of the Istituto Valorizzazione Castelli.
Background
The castle is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1351, the year of the well-known division between the five sons of the Marquis of Filattiera Niccolò I Malaspina, but it is nevertheless certain that walled structures of some importance already existed in the 12th century.

It can be easily reached from Villafranca in Lunigiana in 6 minutes, following the road to Bagnone . It is well indicated with special signs that you will find on your left.
