10th-century village, still fully inhabited
The village of Bagnone is a medieval village located on the pre-Apennine Tuscan-Emilian. The town hosts various establishments, including bars, grocery stores, small shops, and high-end restaurants.
The surrounding areas of Bagnone are home to renowned farms that produce typical local products, such as the Treschietto onion and chestnut flour.
The village is characterized by small waterfalls that flow on the right side of the town, formed in the rock by the flow of the Bagnone stream, which gives the village its name.
The circular tower located in this area of the village was used to monitor the valley’s road network and was connected to other similar towers: Malgrate, Groppoli, and Mulazzo.
People have inhabited the Bagnone area since the Stone Age: the discovery of a Stele Statue in Treschietto is proof of this. Today, the Stele is preserved at the Museum of Stele Statues in Pontremoli.
Furthermore, in 963, the village of Bagnone is mentioned for the first time in a document where Emperor Ottone I of Germany lists courts, parishes, and castles under the protection of the Bishops-Counts of Luni.
Subsequently, Bagnone became a fief of the Malaspina family of the Spino Fiorito, until 1351 when it became an independent fief, still under the Malaspina family.
In the 15th century, Bagnone became part of the Lordship and later the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, until the Napoleonic period.
In 1815, it returned to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and then, in 1849, became part of the Duchy of Parma, until 1859.
Since the unification of Italy, Bagnone has been part of the Province of Massa-Carrara.
