Panoramic Balcony of Lunigiana
The village of Bibola, probably of Roman origin, is located among the hills of the municipality of Aulla. Thanks to some written sources from the early 7th century, we know that Bibola was part of a fortified route since the Byzantine era, which extended from Luni to Lucca. From the opposite direction, passing through the small villages of Pulica, Bibola, Rubra (Terrarossa), and Corneda, the route led towards Liguria.
Bibola is truly a panoramic balcony, offering stunning views from the Apennines to the Apuan Alps. From here, you can see directly in front of you Monte Pizzo D’Uccello (1,781 meters above sea level), and it almost feels as though you could touch it.
In the ancient village of Bibola, the ruins of what was once one of the most important castles of Lunigiana still remain. This fortress served as a defensive stronghold for the entire valley since the Byzantine era. Bibola is still part of the route of the Via Francigena, which was traveled by Sigeric on his journey from Canterbury to Rome in the year 990.
