Borgo di Casola in Lunigiana

The village that connects Lunigiana with Garfagnana

The village of Casola is located in eastern Lunigiana. It is the last sizeable town on the border with Garfagnana. Situated along the ancient Via del Volto Santo, it was an important connection to Lucca. This enabled the village’s economic development during the medieval period, making it a strategic passage for goods and people.

Inside the village, you can admire a beautiful 15th-century tower house, the 13th-century Church of Sant’Andrea, and the ancient 14th-century gate, as well as the old circular tower at the entrance of the town.

Casola in Lunigiana was an important territory and was therefore contested over the centuries: first under the Bishop of Luni in the 9th century, then under the Casola family, and in the 13th century by the Malaspina. In the 14th century, it was annexed to the possessions of Lucca.
