Village that connected the Malaspina Marquisate with the Genoese territory
The village of Villa di Tresana in the Medieval period was a strategic point in the lands of the Malaspina family. For this reason, an important Castle was built in one of its small hamlets. The surrounding areas then took the name of Località Castello di Villa di Tresana.
It was a stronghold that served as an important link with the Genoese area and the western regions. In 1416, Villa di Tresana was attacked by the Genoese family of the Campofregoso, and later, around the 1500s, it was destroyed by Giovanni of the ‘Black Bands.
Some information related to the Castle of Villa di Tresana
The Castle was connected to Villafranca in 1266, which was already part of the vast Malaspina marquisate that extended from Brugnato to Castevoli and from Lusuolo to Podenzana. The marquisate stretched along the western side of the Magra River, parallel to the Francigena Way in the valley. To defend the territory, the Malaspina marquises built numerous fortresses and castles, which are still present today.

The ancient village and the location where the medieval castle was built are located a short distance from the village of Tresana, in the municipality of the same name.
Once you pass the village of Barbarasco, continue on the road to Tresana. After about 3 km, you will find a sign on the left indicating ‘Villa.’ Turn and follow the road until you reach the village. The castle is located in the highest part of the town.
