The ancient village of Nicolò Malaspina with a 14th-century castle
The village of Malgrate is an ancient medieval village within the municipality of Villafranca in Lunigiana. The village was founded by Marquis Nicolò Malaspina during the early decades of the 14th century when his ancient castle was built. The castle’s main feature is a cylindrical tower nearly 25 meters high, which served as a watchtower for the valley and was connected to the tower of the Castle of Bagnone.
In 1351, the Feudal Estate of Malgrate was expanded to include the localities of Filetto, Orturano, Irola, and Mocrone, which, upon Nicolò’s death, were governed by his son Bernabò Malaspina.
Today, it is possible to visit the village and the Castle of Malgrate.
