Piagna and “Valli di Zeri”: Community Cooperative
The village of Piagna lies in the Rossano Valley, within the municipality of Zeri. Built in the 17th century, it is nestled among the mountains.
The village takes its name from the distinctive “piagne”, stone slabs once used to roof the houses in its historic centre. These slabs were quarried from the old pit located near the settlement.
Piagna was a village of “carbunain”, as the workers who extracted charcoal were called.
Like many other villages in Lunigiana, Piagna gradually became depopulated. Yet thanks to new initiatives, such as the village social club (Circolo), the Community Cooperative and the establishment of the Consortium for the Protection and Promotion of Zeri Lamb and Sheep, local traditions and products have been revived and the hamlet is once again gaining recognition and visitors.
Two noteworthy establishments are based in Piagna: Agriturismo Le Modeste, tireless in promoting Zeri culture, it houses a restaurant that still cooks in traditional testi clay pans, especially renowned for its Zeri lamb and Ristorante alla Vecchia Scuola.
Curiosities for visitors
