The small medieval village, characterized by medieval tower-houses, stone-vaulted alleys and hidden little squares
The Borgo di Ponticello, beautifully preserved, dates back to the period between the 14th and 15th centuries. It is located in the municipality of Filattiera, in the pre-hill area along the Via Francigena.
The entire village is built from stone and is characterized by ancient tower-houses: medieval structures originally built for defensive purposes, later used as grain storage or as residences.
The tower-house located in the main square of the village, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, is still inhabited and very well preserved. The second tower-house in the village is located in one of the small alleys and is now the headquarters of the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) section of Filattiera.
The tower-houses are fortified buildings with three or more stacked levels, characterized by an entrance on the first floor, accessible via a ladder that would be pulled up during sieges or attacks. Inside, the rooms were originally connected by trapdoors, as these buildings were used to store food reserves.
Every year in August, the Festa dei Mestieri nel Borgo (Crafts Festival in the Village) takes place in Borgo di Ponticello. This historical reenactment brings to life the daily customs and traditions of the Lunigiana farming communities. The cellars and ground floors are opened and set up, offering visitors the chance to experience ancient crafts, enjoy delicious stuffed focaccette (flatbreads), and sing together in good company.
