Discover Gragnola: The Medieval Village Between History and Nature
Gragnola, an enchanting medieval village located in the Municipality of Fivizzano, is a must-visit destination for those looking to explore the Lucido Valley and the magnificent Apuan Alps. This charming historic center traces its roots back to the late Middle Ages, when it flourished as a lively grain market, the origin of its name.
The origins of Gragnola are shrouded in mystery; some historians believe it may be identified with ‘Forum Clodi,’ a location mentioned in the ancient Tabula Peutingeriana, one of the oldest road maps in Europe, dating back to the early Middle Ages. In 1366, Gragnola became an independent fief, separating from the Malaspina marquises of Fosdinovo. Its historical significance is reflected in the imposing Aquila Castle, which towers over the village and stands as a symbol of protection and strength.
Until 1982, Gragnola remained an enclave of Fosdinovo, before becoming part of the Municipality of Fivizzano following a popular referendum. Today, visitors can still admire the remnants of the ancient walls that once enclosed the village, along with the houses whose marble mullioned windows and finely crafted sandstone portals tell stories of a past rich in culture and tradition.
Among the must-see sights in Gragnola are the Church of Saints Ippolito and Cassiano and the charming marble fountain located in Piazza San Nicola.
