Castello di Castiglione del Terziere

Castiglione del Terziere Castle:
VI century castle, seat of the Niccolò V Humanistic Studies Center

Castiglione del Terziere Castle is located in the locality of the same name in the municipality of Bagnone. It was built between the 6th and 7th centuries on ancient Byzantine settlements. In about 1200 the castle passed under the jurisdiction of the Malaspina family and towards the middle of 1300 Franceschino Malaspina renewed its architecture.
The initial structure consisted of a keep, a square-based tower and a wall, to which Franceschino had a new wing used as a residence and a cylindrical tower added with an extension.
In 1400 the castle passed under the control of Florence, who established the Captaincy of Justice and the residence of some officials there.
In 1969 Castiglione del Terziere Castle was bought by the philanthropist Loris Jacopo Bononi, who over the years made the castle a center for collecting and studying artifacts of Lunigiana. In fact, in 1973 the castle became the seat of the “Centro di Studi Umanistici Nicoloò V”, an institution that deals with the study and dissemination of topics concerning the Lunigiana. The castle’s magnificent library houses codices, manuscripts and printed books from the 14th century to the present. There you will find numerous history and literature texts by authors or topics on the Lunigiana.
