18th century bridge, site of many discoveries of Statue Stele
The Bocciari Bridge is found in the Bocciari Wood in the locality of Bardine (Fivizzano Township). Built in the 18th century, it’s often wrongly called Ponte Vecchio, in fact after the name of the little nearby village. It’s one of the smallest bridges in the Apuan
area, with a keystone height of barely 3 meters above the creek. In 2008 the Regional Park of the Apuan Alps shored it up and restructured it in an important project. Nearby this small bridge and the village of Ponte Vecchio in 1905 were found a group of 8
Statue Stele. Testimony to the very archaic presence of humankind in this valley.
The surprising discovery of the Statue Stele of the Pontevecchio Group is characterized by the find of 8 integral statues with only one in fragmented condition (Pontevecchio IX). They are certainly among the oldest in the Lunigiana group and were found in situ, that is, in the same place in which they were originally positioned and in the order of height. Four of the statues are asexual (without elements to distinguish their sex), while two are surely masculine and three feminine.
Where is Bocciari Bridge located?
The bridge is found in the locality of Bardini, in the township of Fivizzano, from which it’s however 20km away, while only 17km from Carrara.
How to find the bridge?
Once past the town of Bardine, take the road the locality of Tenerano, continue until arriving at a turnoff along a dirt road on the right with the sign “Ponte Vecchio,” take the dirt road and go on about 500m.
