Codiponte Bridge

Romanesque bridge on the Via del Volto Santo

This particular bridge at Codiponte Village was reconstructed in 2020, thanks to an initiative by the Casola township, under the supervision of the Archeological and Fine Arts ministries, as well as the provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara. Its principal feature is that for its entire length there are three donkey-hump arches.
Built in the Romanesque period in this small town that at the time boated thousands of inhabitants. It was the principal connection between the port of Genoa and Lucca, essential to silk transport: the Via del Volto Santo (Way of the Sacred Face). It also united the port at Bocca di Magra and Sarzana with Garfagnana, in order to arrive at Lucca crossing the Apuan Alps: the San Nicolo of Tea Pass.
At the center of the bridge, there’s a depiction where we find incised the insignia of Pisa, a reminder of the town of Codiponte’s importance, constantly fought over by the rival cities of Lucca and Pisa.
For centuries then Codiponte served as a passage for merchants from Genoa, Lucca, Reggio Amelia, Modena, Pisa, Florence, and finally the Este Dukedom, when the territory passed to the ruling family of Modena, through the marriage of Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspia and Ercole III of Este.
