Dantesque Lunigiana Museum

The Museum that promotes the works of Dante Alighieri, exiled in Lunigiana

‘La casa di Dante in Lunigiana’ Museum (formerly known as “Museo Dantesco Lunigianese”) is based on Dante’s relationship with the Lunigiana of his time. The present geographical area of this territory is defined by the two provinces of La Spezia and Massa Carrara.

The museum was founded in 2003 by the “Centro Lunigianese di studi Danteschi”, which is solely responsible for the museum’s day to day running. The association  not only deals with enhancing and promoting Dante’s life in Lunigiana , but it also carries out new studies on the works and thoughts of the Supreme Poet, specifically concerned with the philosophy of Universal Peace (Pax Dantis in Latin) which was inspired by Dante’s successful diplomatic mission (Peace of Castelnuovo, 6th October 1306).

In the museum there are many teaching materials which clearly highlight parts of the Poet’s works that go from Canto VIII of Purgatory, the Peace Acts of Castelnuovo, the Epistle of Friar Ilaro of the Corvo monastery to Uguccione of the Faggiuola  and then from the IV Epistle of the Casentino to Moroello Malaspina, the Legend of the first seven cantos of Hell and finally the several quotations from Lunigiana in the complete works, the so-called “opera omnia”, of Alighieri.

The exhibition is completed by the Art Gallery and the Historical Library, where it is possible to find all the most famous centuries-old traditions of Dante’s studies in Lunigiana.
