Sacred Art Museum of San Giovanni

A museum containing relics and paintings of the fifteenth century

The “Museo di arte sacra di San Giovanni” is in the building where the ancient church of Saint John once stood, near the Augustinian convent in Fivizzano. Today both the museum and the convent are home to numerous events during the summer the most important of which is the ” MutaMenti ” festival, organized every year by the “Istituto Valorizzazione Castelli di Massa”.
The museum is divided into two sections: the first containing the works from the former church of Saint John, destroyed during a major earthquake in 1920, and those of its Augustinian convent. The second part houses works collected from the sacred buildings of the numerous hamlets of the borough of Fivizzano in order to preserve and safeguard them. This second part includes: the work of Saint Nicola from Tolentino, a painting from the mid-1400s. Furthermore, the museum houses silver chalices from the Tuscan art school, illuminated 14th century antiphonaries, wooden busts of saints from the Renaissance and Baroque wooden candlesticks.
