The Arlia Mill

Ancient Water Mill

The Arlia mill is located just outside the homonymous village in the Comune di Fivizzano. Built during the 19th century and certainly in operation since the opening, it is still a perfectly working mill. It was used by the local population of the mountain community until the 1960s.

Inside there are three grinding stones which can be easily distinguished regarding their use: chestnuts, wheat and corn. Since 1968 it has fallen into disuse but thanks to the commitment and funds of the Union of Mountain Comunities of Lunigiana it has been completely renovated and the water mechanism is in perfect working order.
In one of the rooms of this mill, an exhibition of educational panels on the mills of Lunigiana has been set up.
The Mill is open upon request which must be made to the Comune di Fivizzano. During events on the processing of chestnuts, the mill is open for demonstrations of water grinding.
