Stele Statues Museum of Lunigiana

The Stele Statues told in the Museum of the Piagnaro Castle

Perhaps the most evocative of all the museums in Lunigiana, housed in the PiagnaroCastle the Stele Statues Museum of Lunigiana contains the exhibition of sandstone statues, built by the populations who inhabited Lunigiana between the 4th and 1st millennium BC

Male and female human figures, sculpted and represented through abstract shapes, still remain today one of the major unsolved enigmas. There is no certainty regarding the reason why they were carved, but they were found all over Lunigiana: from Pontremoli to Filattiera to Fivizzano.
They have been divided by archaeologists into 3 typological groups (A, B and C). Made between the Copper and Iron Ages, the Stele Statues have gone through the centuries undergoing mutilations and concealments, sometimes even used during the Byzantine era for the construction of “Pievi” and in the Middle Ages of private houses. Today they represent the most important symbol of Lunigiana. The Museum in the Piagnaro Castle is today the most representative in Italy, both for the enormous number of statues found and the information about the discovery sites.
